In reality, the virus probably won't survive out in the open, but pipes are passed fairly quickly. I'd just ask the person with the cold sore to wipe it with a kleenex after s/he hits it. But it's not something ridiculously serious either. Over half of the population in the US has oral herpes. A cold sore appearing 1-2 times a year will not be the end of you. You can relax :) If this still has you uneasy, don't every put your mouth on anything someone else already has. You can be THAT person, haha. Just kidding.
