If you want to know for sure then get tested for oral herpes. Dry lips along with burning, itching or tingling sensations before the sore appears are all symptoms. Just wash your hands regularly specially after touching a cold sore. Cold sores are very contagious when they are active. It's possible but not likely to spread to other areas since the herpes virus does not last long away from the body. So if you touch a sore then hesitate to touch any where else the risk of transmission would be very low. Some times I get some nasty emails when I say cold sores are oral herpes.
