Oral herpes is serious and at the same time, it is nothing to worry about.

It is one of the most commonly spread disease on the planet.

You get it from skin to skin contact like kissing or indirect contact like if I have it and I drink from a glass and then you drink from the same glass... then you can get it.

It is not serious because, like I said, it is the most common disease in the world; however, it is serious because if you have it and you give someone oral sex, they can get genital herpes from your oral herpes and vice versa.

Basically, you don't want it! lol

Cold sores are usually caused by the oral herpes virus. It's commonly passed on when relatives or friends with cold sores kiss children. It's very contagious while there are signs of an out break so the only thing to worry about is not kissing or giving oral sex while you have one. If you give oral sex while you have a cold sore, it can be passed to the genitals. Cold sores are not all that serious to have (as they are not considered to be an std) and it won't kill you. Lots of people have cold sores and live long healthy normal lives.

A cold sore on you mouth is completely normal. It is considered herpes type 1 but about 90% of people have this, including infants. Herpes type 1 is transfered by kisses or any skin contact. However, Herpes type one can be transfered you the genitals via oral sex. Just refrain from oral sex while you have a cold sore. This is very unlikely but it does happen. Unless you have cold sores on you genital area you do not have genital herpes which is the "herpes" that people worry about that is an STD. Use protection when you have any form of sex!

I do believe I read that 80% of people have oral herpes. I probably have it and don't even know it! You can get herpes from kissing but also from putting your mouth on something other people have recently put their mouth on.

It's nothing to worry about, but you could argue that about some other STDs too. It's an inconvenience to some people, I'm sure.
