Cold sores = herpes. But don’t worry, a huge percentage of the population of the US is infected even if they don’t get outbreaks. You could easy have gotten it from your mother or your grandma. Don’t stress about it.

Yes a cold sore is a form of Herpes.
No
Same just a different version….Herpies has versions:
Herpes is an infection that is caused by a herpes simplex virus (HSV). Oral herpes causes cold sores around the mouth or face. Genital herpes affects the genitals, buttocks or anal area. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). You can get it from having sex, even oral sex. The virus can spread even when sores are not present. Mothers can also infect their babies during childbirth.
a cold sore is a TYPE of herpies not the STD that evryone asociates it with

Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are two species of the herpes virus family, Herpesviridae, which cause infections in humans.[1] Eight members of herpesviridae infect humans to cause a variety of illnesses including cold sores, chickenpox or varicella, shingles or herpes zoster (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and various cancers, and can cause brain inflammation (encephalitis). All viruses in the herpes family produce life-long infections.
They are also called Human Herpes Virus 1 and 2 (HHV-1 and HHV-2) and are neurotropic and neuroinvasive viruses; they enter and hide in the human nervous system, accounting for their durability in the human body. HSV-1 is commonly associated with herpes outbreaks of the face known as cold sores or fever blisters, whereas HSV-2 is more often associated with genital herpes.
An infection by a herpes simplex virus is marked by watery blisters in the skin or mucous membranes of the mouth, lips or genitals.[1] Lesions heal with a scab characteristic of herpetic disease. However, the infection is persistent and symptoms may recur periodically as outbreaks of sores near the site of original infection. After the initial, or primary, infection, HSV becomes latent in the cell bodies of nerves in the area. Some infected people experience sporadic episodes of viral reactivation, followed by transportation of the virus via the nerve’s axon to the skin, where virus replication and shedding occurs.[2]
Herpes is contagious if the carrier is producing and shedding the virus. This is especially likely during an outbreak but possible at other times. There is no cure yet, but there are treatments which reduce the likelihood of viral shedding.
Genital herpesIntroductionGenital herpes is an infection of the genitals caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which also causes herpes on the face (in the form of cold sores).
There are two types of the herpes simplex virus, type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). Both types can affect the genitals and the face.
Type 1 is more likely to cause herpes on the face, such as cold sores around the mouth, and
Type 2 is more likely to cause herpes on the genitals, such as blisters on the penis or vulva (entrance to the vagina).
Around 80% of people with genital herpes never know that they are carrying the virus because there are often no symptoms (or very mild symptoms which are almost unnoticeable, such as a slight itchiness or red patch of skin in the genital area). This means that many cases of herpes go undiagnosed. However, even with no symptoms, it is possible to pass genital herpes on to a sexual partner because the virus may sometimes be present in your genital area.
I am not sure how true it is but I have read that if you have cold sores then you can’t catch genital herpes as one blocks out the other but you can pass on the sores during oral sex but it is still cold sores on the genitals not genital herpes.
Also they virus has been connected to post viral fatigue syndrom.
It’s a form of herpes, but not the venereal kind. So yes, and no. I have dealt with cold sores, and have gotten the same derisive comments from my friends. The term "herpes" has that stigma because of what it’s commonly associated with- that being careless sexual encounters.
If it’s a real problem try using Neosporin lip balm- I have been using it for several years and haven’t had a cold sore since.
Um, Julieisbest, you friggin moron- what is wrong with what I said? I have experienced these things first hand and I told the truth. I said "stigma"-that doesn’t mean I don’t condone the general sentiment. Get a dictionary and learn to comprehend what you read a little better you twit. And perhaps pull your panties out of your arsse-they are obviously aggravating you.
A cold sore is a form of herpes. However, there are two different types of herpes and in order to determine which one you have you have to do either a culture of the outbreak (a doctor takes a sample of the sore and does lab tests on it) or you can do a blood test which will determine which type you have. They are both very similar. Here is a website which may be very helpful to you. http://www.herpes.com/
Hope this helps, but remember, just because you may have herpes doesn’t mean your life is over. It has just changed. You can lead a perfectly normal life with herpes as long as you take the correct precautions mentioned in this website info.
Cold sores are indeed a form of herpes! Don’t believe it, ask your doctor.
Cold sores are the outbreak of the oral form of herpes. The virus itself never goes away, but the sore does. However, in times of stress, you will tend to have more sores breakout.
If you are asking if a cold sore and genital herpes are the same thing, the answer is yes and no.
A cold sore is an infection of herpes simplex virus (HSV). And genital herpes is also an infection of herpes simplex virus (HSV). But there are two types of HSV.
HSV type 1 causes cold sores, is is generally spread by kissing or by sharing eating utensils while a sore is present and can also cause sores around the genitals.
HSV type 2 causes sores in the genital area and also causes the herpes infection seen in babies who are delivered vaginally in women who have genital herpes. HSV type 2 is generally spread by sexual contact and can sometimes cause mouth sores.
pretty much the same thing
