Cold sores are typically caused by oral herpes and they are very common to have, 50-80 percent of the world has cold sores or fever blisters on the mouth. All of those activities could have lowered your immune system a bit and triggered an out break.
Stress on your immune system usually triggers cold sores to break out. The genital type of herpes is usually contracted when you have sex with some one that has oral or genital herpes. Cold sores are easily and commonly passed on just by kissing some one that has an out break of them. You can contract cold sores during child hood (and before you become sexually active) from relatives or friends giving or receiving kisses to and from children with out knowing that cold sores are contagious.

ok firstly cold-sores are herpes (hsv1)it tends to start with odd sesations on the outside of the lip that then turns into a blister/s which within 24hrs burst to leave a crusty weepy sore so it does not sound like you have a cold sores this first episode can also cause the person to feel slightly unwell with flu like symptoms.

You might just have been rubbed wrong on your lips by the sponge. Or be irritated by the salt in the chips, but it really could be anything. Maybe you nicked your lip with your teeth and now it's inflamed.

Herpes on your lips can be transmitted by kissing, or sharing lipstick or drinks. You don't have to be having sex to get it. Sexual transmission of herpes usually refers to genital herpes (though if you're having sex, one would assume you are kissing...)

The initial breakout of oral herpes usually involves other symptoms and you would normally feel very miserable.

A cold sore is a caused by a virus...it is a strain of the herpes virus but relax....you don't need to have sex to get a cold sore on your lips. What you have on your lip sounds more like your skin is just chapped from all the salt in the chips and probably the sponge used to remove the make up caused a sore spot on your lip. If it is was a cold sore you would have felt some tingling on your lip before the sore showed up.
