It is so frustrating to get a cold sore on the lip as it is so visible to others. What can be done to both minimize the duration and prevent these annoyances in the future?

It seems that unfair that getting a cold sore on the lip occurs in such a viewable spot. However, often the lips are vulnerable for fever blister problems because of the fact that the skin there can be weakened from ultraviolet lighting. It’s always important to put some spf protection on your lip when you are outdoors or at the beach. Pilots also can get cold sores on the lip due to their uv exposure.

Often the tingle or initial sting is the warning sign for a cold sore eruption. You become astute at noticing this once you’ve had one or two herpes cold sore breakouts. The ones on and around the lips are herpes simplex virus 1. This is different than both herpes simplex virus 2 as well as canker sores.

Two factors that can contribute to cold sores are a weakened immune system as well as having had physical intimacy with someone who has the cold sore herpes virus 1. When your immune system is weak , you can be run down and this makes you susceptible to developing a cold sore or a respiratory problem. Because cold sores are contagious, if you were kissing someone with the herpes simplex virus 1, you can also get a cold sore on the lip. Some say that it can also be caught by sharing the same cup. Please note that it isn’t only contagious during the sore part but during all it’s stages. Some people think it’s only when it becomes a red sore that it’s contagious, but it is through it’s full course, which can be several days long.

Some people find taking the amino acid l-lysine preventively will help reduce or even eliminate cold sore on lips outbreaks. This is because the amino acids need to be balanced and sometimes we get the balance off due to the proportion if we take protein powders, eat a lot of peanut butter etc. The body cannot produce lysine so it’s a useful supplement.

Because the lip cold sore gets stimulation due to eating, it can be frustrating to see it begin to heal but then re-open. It will eventually heal, but it may go through a couple of times of scabbing, bleeding and then re-forming the cold sore scab since chewing stimulates the area. It is similar to a child having a scab on his knee and how that re-opens when he walks so it takes longer to heal than elsewhere on the body.

There are over the counter, prescription and natural remedies. Each of these will work in to shorten the healing time. Keep in mind that when using natural remedies, you need to be logical when analyzing the solutions. Ice , tea bags and witch hazel are all useful. If you search on the internet, however, you get other recommendations that include using nail polish remover, lighting a candle near it on a spoon or utilizing ear wax. Do not use a method that is just an internet post on a forum without research as the skin is very sensitive and you do not want to damage it.

Fever blisters should not be confused with Canker sores (also called aphthous ulcers) for the latter are small, shallow ulcers occurring on the tongue, soft palate, or inside the lips and cheeks. Fever Blisters, in fact, are small sores that typically occur outside the mouth on the lips, cheeks, chin, or in the nostrils, and tend to recur when your immune system is weakened by stress, fatigue or infection.

Another more common name for fever blisters is cold sores. Now having a cold sore does not necessarily coincide with having a cold, although it is possible when you take into account that if you have a cold, then your immune system is down and and outbreak can occur.

Fever blisters are highly contagious, and that is why when a person is infected with it, they really s should avoid practices like sharing of plates, cups, towels and other personal things to other person, even if they have touched the blister with their hands it is vital that they wash their hands straight away before coming into contact with someone else’s skin.

Fever blisters and canker sores are two of the most common disorders of the mouth, causing discomfort and annoyance to millions of Americans. They are usually painful; pain may precede the appearance of the lesion by a few days. They or cold sores are small red blisters that usually appear on the lips and outer edges of the mouth, and are small red coloured boils.

Recurrent cold sores usually develop where facial skin and the lip meet. About 6 to 48 hours before a cold sore is visible, you may feel tingling, burning, itching, numbness, tenderness, or pain in the affected area. Recurrences appear to be less frequent after age 35. About half of the people who have been infected with herpes simplex type 1 will have a few episodes every year. The reason theat there are recurrences of this condition is because once you have the virus, then it is with you for life as there is no known cure as of yet, however it is possible to try and control the outbreak through various methods.

Some of the various methods for treating cold sores vary from over the counter medication through to old wives tales, and finally landing on natural remedies that work to a certain degree. So which ones are the best to use?

Well I suppose it comes down to personal choice, but first of all I would avoid the old wives tales, which you will probably guess as they will just sound outlandish. Therefore that just leaves you with over the counter, or natural remedies, both have their pros and cons and are likely to give the same results.

The reason I say that is because most treatments for fever blisters take about ten days to take effect, but the lifespan of the blister is about ten days too, so really all you are doing in either case is just getting some pain relief, so why pay for it if you can go and get an ice cube to do exactly the same job.

What are the causes of cold sores? This article will tell you quickly. You will learn the main reasons for a cold sore. You will quickly identify the causes of cold sores for yourself.

You may have heard of these as causes of cold sores - physical and mental stress, fever, sun and cold weather. They are not the direct causes of cold sores however. We call these cold sore triggers. Folks claim these are causes of cold sores because you often get a cold sore along with them. These triggers cause your body to change and be less resistant to the cold sore virus.

herpes simples lips

Basically, every cold sore, oral herpes or fever blister ulcer is caused by the herpes simplex virus - type 1 or type 2. It hides in your nerve root cells. If the herpes virus activates it moves to the surface quickly. It then infects the nerve cells and begins replicating - destroying those cells in the process. Since the herpes virus lives in the nervous system, it can sense the slightest changes in your body caused by the cold sore triggers mentioned above.

Here are the three main conditions of your body that will help activate the otherwise dormant cold sore virus. These are the basic causes of cold sores.

1. ACID pH.
The pH balance of your body is a measure of your acidity or alkalinity. This pH scale ranges from 1 to 14 with 7 being neutral. Below 7 is acid, above 7 is alkaline. Ideal pH for optimum health is 7.4 pH - slightly alkaline.

You usually will not get any cold sore as long as you stay above 7 pH. If your pH drops below 7 you are becoming acid. Oxygen in your cells drop and you are inviting a cold sore outbreak. This is one of the main causes of cold sores.

Stress creates hormone changes that lower your pH balance. By doing this, stress causes cold sores. Colds, flu and frigid weather stress the body - also lowering pH. These are claimed to be causes of cold sores.

Coffee, soda and alcohol lower pH and causes cold sores in many people. Meats like pork and beef will do so also. Most vegetables are alkaline when digested. You must keep your diet in balance to prevent a cold sore event.

Although an acid pH may be the main cause of cold sores, the next two triggers are also causes of cold sores - especially when combined with a low pH.

stress cold sores

2. LYSINE AND ARGININE OUT OF BALANCE.

Arginine is the main protein building block for the herpes simplex virus. If arginine is not available, your cells cannot create new herpes virus - and no cold sore will occur. This is true even if you have an acid pH balance.

Your cells have a special area within the cell to store arginine. Lysine is also stored in the same area. If you take in high levels of lysine, your cells will make room for it by getting rid of some arginine.

Lysine will not work for creating new herpes virus. Lysine cannot cause cold sores. Replacing arginine with lysine in your cells will greatly reduce cold sore frequency and duration.

Taking lysine supplements is the most common way folks get enough lysine to prevent cold sores.

heal fever blisters3. VITAMINS AND MINERALS.

The power of your immune system - and the strength of your antibodies - is dependant on the nutrients you take in. In particular you need proper quantities of minerals and vitamins. A drop in immune strength makes weak antibodies and causes cold sores. Your best bet for treating and preventing cold sore events is to take in vitamins and minerals from quality food and supplements daily.

Even the American Medical Association agrees that today we do not get optimum quantities of essential vitamins and minerals from food alone. You should also be taking a premium quality multi-vitamin supplement every day.

Look for high amounts of calcium. Calcium is the one key mineral in keeping your body in an alkaline condition.

As you have discovered in this article, the main causes of cold sores are an acid pH, high levels of arginine in your cells and a weak immune system. Stress, mental or physical, causes your body to go into an acid state. Stress also uses up a lot of vitamins and minerals, which weakens your immune system.
There may be many cold sore triggers, and much more you can do, but without a doubt these are the main causes of cold sores in most people.
